Jamie had his workout kit in his bag. While he went to the toilet to change and clean up, Padre sat with me as I finished my chicken pie and beer.
âI knew your dad a little,â said Padre. âHe and I went golfing once or twice.â
âDidnât know Dad golfed,â I said, between forkfuls.
âHe was proud of you,â he said.
I stopped chewing and looked at the man â the priest â across from me. âCome on,â I said. âDonât give me the pastor routine. I donât buy it.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âLookit, I donât know what your agenda is here, but whatever it is, I appreciate your help with my brother tonight and sending off our father, but Iâm not a church guy, so whatever youâre selling, Iâm not buying. Yah?â
âNo? Your dad told me you studied theology in university.â
I threw my head back and laughed. âFigures heâd say that. I took one year of anthropology of religion. Big difference. You donât need to believe in God to get a degree in that. Which I did not get. Because I quit â¦â
âAs for my agenda.⦠My agenda is you.â
âOh, I bet it is, black-shirt,â I said, downing my beer.
Padre looked around the pub, squeezing his knuckles.
âLook, Iâm sorry you had a bad experience with ⦠but, if you ever need to talk,â he said.
âWith all due respect, youâre the last person I would talk to.â
He sighed and sipped his beer. âIâve heard that a lot over the past three months.â
âOh yah?â I said, chewing. âWhatâd you do?â
âIâm new to the parish. You didnât know? The previous priest is on leave. So, Iâm here to serve the parish and help out.â
ââOn leave,â eh?â I nodded sardonically. âYou guys. When I was a kid, our priest was moved out under a cloud and an old Irish guy was brought in to fix us. Fix the parish.â
âI know all about Father Sweet.â
I stopped eating and examined Padre. âHowâs that?â
âHe sponsored the previous parish priest into the seminary. I know all about Sweet.â
My brother came back to our booth, uneasy on his feet. He stood balancing himself at the edge of the table.
âIâll take you home, Jamie,â I said.
âIâd still like to talk with you,â Padre said. âThereâs more to say. About your dad, and maybe about Father Sweet. And Father Lemieux.â
âWhat are you talking about?â asked Jamie.
âDaniel Lemieux, the priest Iâm relieving,â said Padre.
My mouth dropped open. Danny Lemieux; our old neighbour and Father Sweetâs favourite altar boy.
âDidnât we know a Danny Lemieux, back in the day?â Jamie asked me. âFrom hockey or something?â
I nodded slowly.
âIâm here to help,â Padre said evenly, locking his eyes with mine.
âWe need to go,â I said. âJamieâs legless and I need to get him home.â
âDonât worry about this,â Padre said. âIâll take care of the bill.â
Squirm came over to tell us the same thing.
âSquirm, youâre having a bad night with all this gratuity,â I said. âYou canât keep comping everyoneâs bill.â
âItâs karma,â he said dismissively. âWhat goes around comes around.
